Homeowners often ask “how often should air ducts be cleaned?” as if there should be one calendar answer for every house. There is not. Regular vent maintenance starts with simpler things: replace or check the HVAC filter when it is dirty, keep supply registers and return grilles open, clean accessible covers, watch for moisture, and notice changes in airflow or dust. EPA recommends making duct-cleaning decisions on an as-needed basis rather than treating yearly cleaning as automatic maintenance.

What counts as “as needed” can change with the way a home is used. Shedding pets can add hair and dander. Drywall sanding, flooring work and other remodeling can put fine construction dust into open registers. A larger household can create a heavier everyday dust load because people shed skin and clothing fibers and normal activity stirs settled particles back into the air. Pest activity, a poorly fitted filter, material coming from supply registers, or simply not knowing what happened in the ductwork before you bought the house are other reasons to look farther than the vent cover.

None of those conditions proves that every duct needs cleaning. The useful question is whether substantial material is actually inside the system. If the ducts are mostly clean, filters and normal housekeeping may be the better answer. If there is visible buildup, pet hair, renovation debris or other material deeper in otherwise sound ductwork, professional air duct cleaning can remove what is there. A crushed, leaking or disconnected duct is a repair problem, so maintenance works best when the service matches the condition.
