Signs It's Time for a Professional Vent Inspection

The clearest signs that it may be time for an air duct inspection are things you can actually see, smell or feel. Dust coming from vents when the system starts, visible debris farther inside a register, evidence of pests, heavy pet hair in the returns, or a lot of drywall dust after remodeling all give you a specific reason to look deeper. So does buying an older home when the air ducts were never cleaned as far as you know, or you simply have no maintenance history.

Weak airflow from vents can also justify an inspection, but it does not automatically mean the ducts are dirty. One branch could be crushed or disconnected, a damper could be closed, a return could be blocked, or the HVAC system could have another airflow problem. A musty smell from vents also deserves investigation, especially if there is moisture, but nobody should diagnose mold from an odor or a photo alone. The point of an inspection is to replace guessing with evidence.

A professional should be able to explain what is actually visible and why a service is being recommended. If the ducts contain substantial dust or debris, cleaning has a clear purpose. If they are mostly clean and the problem is a leak, moisture source or damaged duct, that needs a different fix. That is a much better standard than cleaning every few years just because someone says you are overdue.
