A higher-efficiency HVAC filter can capture smaller airborne particles, but the highest number on the shelf is not automatically the best choice for every system. EPA commonly points homeowners toward MERV 13, or the highest efficiency the system can accommodate. The filter also has to fit the rack correctly. A gap around the edge allows air to bypass the media, while a filter that creates more resistance than the blower and duct system can handle may contribute to an airflow problem.
Filtration and air duct cleaning solve different problems. The filter works on air that passes through it while the HVAC system is operating; it does not reach backward and remove drywall chunks, accumulated pet hair, pest debris or years of dust already sitting inside a duct. Cleaning removes material that is physically present in the ductwork, but it does not replace filtration, source control or ventilation for particles that continue to be generated inside the home.
If you change to a better filter and the house still seems dusty, do not assume the filter failed or that the ducts must be cleaned. Check that the filter fits, notice whether airflow changed, and look for actual material deeper in the registers. A MERV upgrade addresses future airborne particles that reach the filter. Air duct cleaning is a separate decision based on the condition inside the ducts, not a substitute for choosing a compatible filter.
