Vent Cleaning Myths Debunked: What Really Works for Home Protection

Myth: every home needs air duct cleaning every year. EPA recommends deciding based on actual conditions, not an automatic schedule. Myth: dusty vents mean the whole duct system is contaminated. Dust on a register can come from ordinary household activity; visible buildup deeper in the ducts, material coming from supply registers, pests or significant remodeling debris are stronger reasons to investigate. Myth: duct cleaning cures allergies. The evidence does not support that promise.

Filter myths create their own problems. “Buy the highest MERV number available” ignores whether the HVAC system can handle the added resistance; EPA recommends using an efficient filter the system can accommodate. “Close vents in unused rooms to save energy” can change pressure and airflow in a forced-air system rather than fixing the real source of waste. A filter that fits correctly, open return paths and properly functioning ducts matter more than one simplistic trick.

Another myth is that every duct-cleaning job needs a chemical sanitizer or coating. Chemical products have specific labels and uses and should not be treated as an automatic add-on. What consistently makes sense is less dramatic: control moisture, change dirty filters, keep registers and returns unobstructed, repair damaged ducts, and clean the ductwork when substantial material is actually there. Good vent care starts with the condition, not the sales pitch.
