Vent Surprise: Uncommon Issues That Could Be Impacting Your Home's Air Quality

Some of the strangest material in ductwork gets there through very ordinary routes. Floor returns can collect pet hair, small objects and debris that falls through the grille. Registers left open during remodeling can catch drywall dust, sawdust and flooring debris. A missing or poorly fitted filter can allow particles to bypass the place they were supposed to be captured. Damaged ductwork can also give pests an entry point into a system that looked normal from the room.

Return leaks create another less-obvious path. If a return duct is loose in an attic or crawl space, the HVAC system can pull dusty air from outside the conditioned part of the home. Repeatedly cleaning the duct without sealing the leak would leave the source in place. The same principle applies after pest activity or a renovation: correct the entry route or protect the registers first, then remove remaining material when there is enough buildup to justify cleaning.

Unexpected debris is useful information because it changes the question from “why are my vents dusty?” to “how did this material get here?” Air duct cleaning can remove pet hair, construction debris, pest material and other accumulation that is actually inside the ductwork. It cannot stop an active leak, close a pest entry point or correct filter bypass, so the best result comes from addressing both the source and any material it left behind.
